blog o’the week

I got this idea after doing some “Next Blog” surfing last night and repeatedly ran in to 99% pure drivel, teen angst, wish i were dead, alternating caps crap, browser snatching, transition fading, cursor dingleberry programmed, weird ass music playing that you can’t turn off, “Next Blog” button removing, update browser demanding that you have to dump the page to get out of, blinding background using, wildly colored teeny tiny text using, with super cool fonts they are running so that all the text looks like little squares cause nobody else has that font installed, blogs.

I decided I could be helpful by pointing out that 1 in a thousand that doesn’t suck. The requirements are simple, it has to be fairly new, does not include ANY of the above mentioned crap, the writer has to be literate, has at least 6 posts or more and has no comments to speak of, yet. And shows possible promise of being a good blogger. I am not going to judge them myself. That’s for you guys to do, well do I have to do all the work? Pitch in!

Remember how discouraging it was when you feared no one would read you and you were just a cry in the wilderness? I do and I thought maybe I could help someone out. My first blog o’the week is called “yet another blog…” and can be found here and also a link near the top of my sidebar called of course “Blog o’ the Week” So give it a shot, maybe you will like it, if so, leave a comment of course!

I, too, have used the “next blog” button to see what’s out there, and have also skipped over the vast majority of the blogs I find because of the very reasons you cite. I just hit one that had some lame Casio keyboard music playing automatically, had to hit “back” to get out of it.

i’m flattered that you think my blog is interesting! i hate when i’m randomly browsing through blogs and get to one where you cant read it because of stupid font, too many pictures, horrible colors as well.

    thanks again! =)

I confess, I’ve used “next blog” until one night the damn blog I landed on hijacked my system and downloaded two hijack programs in the space of 10 seconds. SearchMiracle and TwainTech … never again. So what I do now is long into blogspot and look at the list of “10 most recent updated blogs.” I have found some awesome (IMO) blogs that way.

Isn’t it funny? I never expected to have an audience for my blog, I started writing for my mom who lives in Korea as a way for her to know what’s going on in my life without having to call. We can’t seem to have a 5 minutes conversation, ever. So my blog saves a lot of my time.

This is a fun idea of yours. :) me like.

  7. a girl called inky Said:

I never thought anyone but three of my friends in my village would read my shit. Now I have wonderful friends and keep meeting really cool folks from other links, etc. Plus my life was too dull apparently till I became a blogger and a friend of yours. So… giddy up.

  8. Gooch Said:

What a great idea. I would have liked to have had you around when I got started in this. WOuld have saved a lot of time

  9. DefiantHeart Said:

Hey, thanks for stopping by my blog.

I think you have a great idea going. When I started I never thought I would ever get anyone to read my dribble. I actually landed on Vadergrrrls blog by using the “next blog” button and… well… its been kind of like a snowball rolling down hill ever since.

  10. Leese Said:

    Hey Seven,
    I think that’s a great idea you’ve got there.
I remember how it was to blog and not have anyone read you. My blog was originally called “Life in the Nuthouse” and someone from a mental institution stumbled upon my blog, and she was my first commenter. I remember getting so excited, then guilty of being so insensitive to mental health patients…

  11. Seven Said:

inky= and now you got loads of
    wonderful readers, like me!!

Gooch= you said it man, inky found
me when i first started and i met
people from there, now i have lots
    of new friends, you included!

Defiant= ya vader is pretty wild huh?
    and no prob!

Leese= now thats ironic isn’t it?
    and funny to boot!

i got me some sweet pc luvin
TWO new monitors! my 19″ was
starting to get ugly and so i
bought me a new one for Christmas
and I had a 15″ starting to go bad
on my reference pc and i had a
new one in storage. they look so
    purty side by side

I used the next blog button once or twice when they first added the feature. And ran into all the issues you mentioned. I don’t read any of the blogs I found through that. I was finally awake enough and read through your blog. Think it’s cool. Especially love the “If I were Picard…” post. TNG was my all-time favorite Star Trek! :)

  13. Seven Said:

restless= hey thanks! glad you enjoyed it!

  14. Kristin Said:

Great idea! Off to go read…….

  15. angi Said:

Love the idea Seven, Have you tried blog explosion? I have surfed them a few times, but I keep forgetting to check on the ones I marked! lol. I have anough blogs on my daily check list, Your being one of them. I just have to get my daily dose of cajun.

Somehow we found out who Savannah’s donor was, I have some links on my site, check them out.

  16. Inanna Said:

Hey Sayven, check out Joe-nobody… he’s linked above you…umm below you? on my blog. Its not like our blogs but he’s a very good writer.

  17. Mike Said:

Seven, thanks for your comment at my blog firstly.

Second, I have found your challenge on next blog frustrating. I play it a different way. I read comments on a blog I like and pull up their the commenters’ homepage.

I go to their rail and visit blogs they like and go to that rail and visit blogs they like.

It can go for a while.

Here is my latest fav, found today, this lady is cool.

you all come over to mine as well, I will be posting again today, I try to post 3 times a week or so.

  18. Mike Said:

Wait, my post made it look like I was plgging my own site. I was not. Karen ( like I have ever even spoke to her or conversed) is at creatively-amusing.blogspot.com.

    check her out

    I am at seniormoments.blogspot.com

  19. bitchcakes Said:

i’m totally plugging my veryownpersonal site .. come for the cocktails stay for the fun.

  20. Mary Said:

I think Bitchcakes’ blog is awesome. Mine, of course, is also awesome. I’m trying to slowly convert from the stupid Blogger template to something more creative of my own making, cause I’m tired of having a blog that looks like everyone else’s.

Also, Seven, I saw the same crap out there when I tried to do “next blog.” It was like what would happen if you gave your computer a hit of crystal meth or something. I had to stop in order to preserve my own sanity! Also, the amount of anti-Arab or anti-Semetic stuff I saw totally blew my mind.

  21. Seven Said:

wow thanks for the interest in this idea everyone!

i like the idea of hitting that
    “Next Blog” button because it’s
potluck, sort of like pulling a
slot machine, maybe the next pull
    will hit a jackpot
i am a comment hound of course.
    tracking back is fun.

angi= yes i have tried a few of
those and well i never know what
    to search for lol

inana= thanks for the tip hon!
i will check it out. thanks for reminding me that’s alway’s a
good way to find good reading,
in other people’s fav blog list’s

Mike= thanks for the link to Karen’s
blog. i liked it lots and left a
    comment as well.

Bitchcakes!!= i wanna plug both you
and your insane blog you wild
    woman you!! *smooches*

Mary= love your blog too. i check
it frequently! i still chuckle on
    the christmas light post

  22. Karen/Cre Said:

Hey, Seven! Thanks for taking the time to stop by my blog and for introducing me as your Blog of the Week. And thanks to Mike, too, for being a fan of my stuff. I’m honored and not just a little humbled.

And now allow me to return the compliment! What a wonderful site you have here! I’ve enjoyed what I’ve seen so far and look forward to reading more. Do you mind if I share the wealth of your site by linking to it on mine? (I’m going to assume the answer to be yes and risk just having to remove the link if you decide no.) :-)
    Thanks again!
    Karen

  23. Suzanne Said:

This is a good idea to do the blog of the week!!! I linked someone today too, because you’re right…we all love to know someone out there is reading. I also agree with your opinion of wildly enhanced blogs with music! Makes me want to scream! Mine is very purple so i’m told…but that’s about all the bells and whistles you’ll find.
    Great blog. I’ll be back

  24. mellancollyeyes Said:

Ahaha…ahaha… i sure do “remember”…if by “remember” you mean “it’s happening right now…”

eh what can you do? :)

  25. Kat Said:

Hello! Just checkin’ in on ya!

  26. riz Said:

Great idea, Seven. I keep just below the radar, generally. One of my pet peeves is that bloody awful music on a lot of blogs… I hate it with a passion!
