Move Along, Nothing To See Here…

Life has been rather mundane around here lately. There’s not much to report. Seems like all I do is sit at my desk and write code and edit web pages all day long. That’s a good thing but it does get boring at times! The exception was Jules coming to visit about 2 weeks ago, we spent most of a day touring New Orleans and the French Quarter. It was a lot of fun and even though I’ve seen every square inch of N.O. many times over it’s kind of cool to sort of see it through the eyes of someone that’s never been here.

We had the obligatory cafe au lait and beignets at the French Market in the morning then later we stopped and had lunch at the Desire Oyster Bar and Bistro in the Royal Sonesta Hotel on Bourbon St. The meal was quite good, I chose the Crawfish Etouffee and Jules ordered the Cajun Shrimp Alfredo. It was actually quite inexpensive, if you’re ever in town, you should check it out. Tres good! Anyone else coming to New Orleans, be sure to let me know and we can meet up too!

I got something rather interesting in the mail the other day, a notification from the local government that a sex offender has moved into my neighborhood, about two blocks away. Even has the guys photo on the card! I think this idea should be expanded to include ex-cons that were convicted of violent crimes, home invasions, domestic violence and burglaries as well. Wouldn’t you like to know that your neighbor was once a jailbird? Or would that be carrying it too far?

That’s about all I have folks, see I told you there was nothing to see here! LOL I’ll leave you with this cartoon that I thought was hilarious…

Computer Thunder

I noticed about 2 weeks ago my primary PC was starting to act kinda wonky on me. I actually have three including the laptop but the two desktops are in constant use with the slower one (1400 mhz) acting as a backup. I built both of them myself and they were getting kind of old and tired and I knew it. Now it was looking like it might fail on me any day. And since I make my living on my computer I can’t afford to be without it. The primary one was about 6 years old, a 2600 mhz AMD and it was as fast and as powerful as you could get back then. It has served me extremely well over the years.

In computer years though, 2600 mhz is a virtual dinosaur so again I decided to go as fast and powerful as I could. The new one I built this past week is another AMD running at 6000+ mhz with a 160 gig sata 2 hard drive and 2 gigabytes of ddr2 memory. In other words blazing fast. The old machine would take almost 30 seconds to open my Photoshop CS2 program, the new one does it in about 2 seconds. What an amazing difference!

Building it was not without it’s problems though. I ordered all the components online and then carefully assembled everything. Plugged it in, turned it on and… nothing! It refused to boot up, no beeps, no post! Arrgh!! Next came lots of swearing as I tried to figure out which one of the new parts was faulty. It turned out to be the new motherboard. I ended up sending it back for exchange but I couldn’t wait two weeks for them to send another so I ended up buying one locally. Anyway, it now works and works quite well and I’m a happy camper again! Yay!! Hopefully this one will last me another 5 or 6 years.

nancy-grace-200.jpgDoes anyone else dislike Nancy Grace on CNN as much as I do? She is very irritating, just the sound of her indignant voice is enough to make me go change the channel. I hate the way she badgers people on the air, people that are just witnesses to her story and are trying to be helpful. She treats them like dirt. One night she was questioning someone that had a stutter and she actually mocked his stuttering! She acts as though everyone she talks to on air is her own personal doormat. By the way I found that photo on the ‘net, it’s not one that I made up, LOL.

How about showing some social grace, Nancy Grace?

This photo just cracks me up and makes me wonder what the hell is going on here? LOL

I’ve been crazy busy and here’s a few new template designs I’ve done recently, Nappily Evah Aftah and two templates here for the same blog My Juxtaposition . The ones I did are named Many Faces and Butterflies, you’ll have to use the theme switcher to see them both. And another new one here for Unrestricted and a new one over at A Whole Lot of Nothing.

It’s Friday folks!! Hope you guys have a great weekend!!

Your Life, Held For Ransom

I’m almost done with moving in the new house and it’s been a very trying experience to say the least. I’m elated overcome with joy that I’m finally able to get a place of my own again after nearly 5 years of illness. But there’s always something that’s gotta suck all the pleasure out of the experience. And that’s dealing with stupid utility companies!! They make you jump through hoops don’t they?

The previous tenants of the house got busted for stealing electricity so the power company came out and physically pulled the meter. How did that impact me? They wouldn’t turn the power back on at that address until they “completed an investigation” no matter that it was a new tenant with a new lease, etc. So here I am paying rent on a house for an entire week that has no A/C or lights. As hot as it was all last week, that meant no moving in! And then there was no moving in until I got my cable internet up and running, I have to be able to do my work online or the entire ordeal is pointless.

So there I sit all day long in the sweltering heat waiting for the water and gas company to come out to turn those on because you can’t get an appointment, they’ll just show up whenever they damn well please. This also meant that I was missing work waiting on these fukkers!! Grrrrr. The only ones that gave me an appointment was the cable internet and then they show up 2 hours late! As it turned out, my first night of actually sleeping in the new place was two weeks after I signed the lease because of waiting on utilities. Welcome to life in New Orleans after Katrina.

Anyway, enough with the bad, here’s the good! I love the place! It’s been great so far, the place is quiet and comfy, the central A/C will make your nipples hard as rocks, the place looks great and it’s in a nice neighborhood. I love how I have my new office set up and the small garage is a very nice bonus. So without further adieu, here’s a few photos!

New House

Kitchen

Bathroom

Antique Shower

Cool huh? Damn it’s expensive to set up house when you’re basically starting from scratch again. I’ve had to purchase a new fridge, a lawnmower, a washing machine, living room furniture, new desk and all the small stuff like dishes, silverware, pots and pans, cleaning supplies, etc, etc. Seems like a never ending list of stuff you never even thought of. Until you need it. LOL

I’m happy though and things couldn’t be better, this is me reclaiming my life after so many years of insane hardship and illness. It’s all finally coming together for me.

Life is damn good.

Big Apple Part 2

After 3,000 miles of driving from NY to Texas and then back again, it was pretty awesome to finally arrive back in the big city. I know Ally da Pup sure was excited! Once we got settled in and had a good nights sleep I was able to do one of my favorite pastimes when I’m there, people watch. Everywhere you go there are thousands of people walking around, going about their business, running errands, etc. and a lot of them sure dress funny! I finally decided that walking around the streets is sort of like visiting a multi-ethnic Wal-Mart but on a much larger scale. And a lot grittier. I love that virtually everything you need on a daily basis is within walking distance. And then there’s the restaurants, many of them open 24/7.

I think I put on 5 pounds as we ate our way across the city, LOL We made return visits to two of my favorites, the Carnegie Deli (photos at link) which is just a stones throw from Carnegie Hall and an awesome dinner at the Hacienda de Argentine (photos at link) restaurant on the east side. The sandwiches at the Carnegie Deli are legendary with the meat piled on at least three inches thick, the thin slices of bread seem like mere afterthoughts. The Argentine restaurant has the best empanadas I’ve ever tasted and the atmosphere is just amazing. The decor reminds you of a medieval hunting lodge perhaps or maybe the dining room of an ancient castle.

One night we went to this really cool, upscale mexican restaurant called Mama Mexico (photos at link) where we met and had dinner with Julie! She was very cool and fun to talk to. This was my first time meeting her but her and Lisa have met on several occassions before then. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect but we had a great time chatting! I’m glad we finally met! Once we left there, we walked her back to Grand Central near her subway station and we also caught the subway home. This is the street where the enormous steam explosion occurred the very next morning! I think that constitutes a close call!

I finally got to see the American Museum of Natural History which was pretty damn awesome! I snapped a few photos of the dinosaur skeletons, here are two of my favorites!

Triceratops

Tyrannosaurus Rex

There was also a great video show called Cosmic Collisions in the planetarium narrated by Robert Redford. The visuals were stunning, displayed on a huge globe shaped ceiling like theatre that seated hundreds inside of a gigantic sphere.

On one night we accidentally witnessed the grand opening of Justin Timberlakes new restauarant as we walked pass. There were celebrities arriving in limos and walking down a red carpet before entering the place with tons of paparazzi snapping photos like madmen. Complete with screaming female fans and search lights. Just like a Hollywood premier, LOL Here’s a shot I took myself as I walked by.

Unknown Celeb

Does anyone know who that is? I was lucky to get that photo because there were so many people in front of me, the crowd parted just as I passed. I think it may be Jessica Biel but I’m not sure. Anyone?

Here’s what the place looked like the next morning after everything was taken away. Yeah, that’s a hardware store on the left and a convenience grocery on the right, the restaurant features southern cooking and Memphis style barbecue. Not so exciting now. LOL

Justins Restaurant

Anyway, those are the highlights, all in all a great and fun trip thanks to the lovely Lisa! We always have a lot of fun together! Have a great weekend everyone!! Woohoo!!

Back in the Big Easy

I’m back home in New Orleans again and it sucks to be here! After driving around half the country and getting to hang out in Manhattan, N.O. seems so bland and unattractive. Bleah! Lisa just put up a new post about the trip that covers a lot of the details from Texas to New York so I’ll just touch on a few highlights. With photos!

The first leg back was through Arkansas, nothing to see here, so no photos! Memphis and Graceland are a different story though. I’ve never been a fan of Elvis in any way shape or form so I wasn’t all that thrilled about going. I mean come’on, anyone willing to sing a duet with Frank Sinatra is totally uncool in my book. That ain’t rock and roll! That’s too much like Pat Boone singing heavy metal cover songs. Yeah, that bad.

I actually enjoyed the tour quite a bit although the Graceland mansion was a lot smaller than I imagined. Out of respect for Elvis memory, they don’t let you tour the upstairs rooms! That’s total BS, the tour has all the charm of a carnival of tackyness yet they draw the line there. Whatever! We laughed the hardest at Elvis’ extremely tacky decor and this one item in particular. A white fur covered bed with a stereo system built into the overhead canopy. You have to wonder how many women took a ride on this thing! LOL Lisa seemed to think it was really cool though! I wish I had one of those myself!

Elvis Presleys Fur Covered bed

Lying on the bed appeared to be a selection of Elvis’ sequined pajamas, even when he was asleep he was tacky!

The best part about the mansion tour was the trophy building out back on the grounds. It had tons of memorabilia on display, including gold and platinum records with plaques, many of his custom made outfits, old original movie posters from his many flicks and dozens of tv monitors running continous looped clips from his many tv performances thru the years. That was pretty impressive.

Elvis Gold Lame

That night we went to the Rendezvous Restauarant for some Memphis style ribs that were finger licking good! The place was packed with people!

Rendevous Ribs

Then we walked down the alley to check out the world famous Peabody Hotel where they have a group of ducks that come down the elevator from the roof top and take a red carpet march to the lobby fountain twice a day. We were there too late for the duck walk but the lobby was insanely beautiful and very impressive! I found this photo below on the web that’s much nicer than the one I took. Look closely and you can see the ducks swimming in the fountain.

Peabody Fountain

The next morning we drove up thru Nashville and on to Kentucky where we thoroughly enjoyed the mountain scenery. I didn’t take any photos here. Later on though in northern West Virginia we drove thru a mountain pass that had a very unusual rock formation that I just had to get photos. It doesn’t look all that impressive this small, so click on the image to get a larger view with the crescent moon shaped rock layers. Very striking in person, the scale of the pass that was cut thru the rock face is huge, it makes you feel so tiny when you look up at it.

Mountain Pass

Well that’s all for today kids, I have more to share in the next post that will be all about the New York part of the trip with more photos! Including meeting Evil Julie and a close encounter with Justin Timberlake! Hope you guys are having a great weekend!

Back in the Big Apple

We were so tired when we got in last night, I think we both just collapsed into comas. Ally da Pup was certainly elated to see NY again, she sure perked up when we got into familiar territory. Right after we we crossed the George Washington Bridge she sensed we were close to home and got very excited. She had a very miserable trip, she does not like riding in a car at all and seemed to be mad at us the entire trip. LOL Poor dog, probably believes the entire purpose of the trip was for no other reason than to torture her senseless.

I’ll just have time to post a few highlights and of course meeting fellow blogging buddies is on the top of the list. Meeting Jules at La Madeleine Cafe and Bakery for breakfast was very cool and fun. It was great finally meeting her after reading her blog for so long. We didn’t have nearly enough time to hang out! She is very sweet and funny, and a lot quieter than I expected, though I think she was a bit nervous. Unfortunately, I was still half asleep when we met, so I know I wasn’t very talkative, however, she and Lisa got along famously and I mostly let them do the talking while I absorbed as much caffeine and food as I could.

Anyone that reads Jules regularly knows how irreverent and fun she can be on her blog so you’ll have to read her post to find out what I mean. She did unzip her pants for us though! Woohoo! Of course you’ll have to read her take on that! A very nice post! Hugs Jules!

We drove across Arkansas (nothing to see here except porn shops and 18 wheelers LOL) to Memphis where we were able to snag some awesome barbecue at the Rendevous, a ribs joint made more famous in a John Grisham novel, The Firm, take a short tour of the Graceland Mansion (70’s tack fest LOL) and browse the incredibly beautiful lobby of the famous Peabody Hotel in downtown. That’s the place famous for the ducks marching to the fountain in the center of the lobby twice a day. Unfortuately we missed the duck march but still enjoyed the visit.

Moving on we passed thru Nashville again and on up thru Kentucky where we marveled at the beauty of the Blue Grass Parkway scenery. West Virginia was next, another beautiful state, where we met up with the one and only Nanner Peach. Nanner and I met once before when she made a trip thru New Orleans back in March 2005 and we had a blast day tripping around the French Quarter. This time we went out to eat dinner with her and her son Nate at one of her favorite restaurants. OMG, we were stuffed and the food was very good. Nate is fun and lively and a good looking young man, takes after his mom!

After dinner we all went over to Nanner’s newly refurbished home. It’s looking great and is coming along nicely, the repairs look nearly complete! If you read her blog, you know her home was nearly completely destroyed in a fire in which most of her cats died. Very, very sad. Nanner is very soft spoken and smiles a lot and has always been one of my favorite blogging friends. I think she has met more fellow bloggers than anybody, we were mentally going over her list and I’m sure we counted more than 20 people!

Now that we’re back in NY and had a good night’s sleep we’re up and about planning what we’ll be doing in Manhattan for the next few days before I fly back to N.O. on Thursday. We’re trying to plan a meeting with Evil Julie, even though I’ve been here a few times before, we haven’t gotten together yet. That should be a lot of fun! We’re also planning a trip to the Museum of Natural History in Central Park, I’ve always wanted to go there. I’m a big fan of natural and human history and I’m really looking forward to it.

That’s all for now! You’ll also want to read Lisa’s update on the trip right here. Although I do have a few photos to post, I’m going to wait till I get back to N.O. and write another post about that stuff!

Road Trip!

I’ll see you guys next week! Saturday morning I’ll be flying up to New York City to meet with Lisa and from there we’re going to drive halfway across the USA for a little vacation time. Sounds like fun, no? Even Ally da Pup will be coming along for the ride. I’ll be bringing my laptop and taking pictures too, maybe I’ll have some photos worth posting! How cool is that?

There’s a lot of things I want to see, stuff like the world’s largest ball of twine, Larry’s Snake Farm, Dinosaurland, the Spam Museum and hundreds of other crappy roadside tourist traps LOL Unfortunately, Lisa isn’t too keen on seeing those places so we’ll have to compromise between her shoe stores and my tourist traps. Music choices are another thing we can’t agree on so I’m loading up my cell phone with as much of my heavy metal collection as possible and bringing along my headphones.

Worlds largest boot!
Giant Boot Attraction

Huge Plastic Whale!
Huge Plastic Whale!

We’ll try to keep you posted depending on internet connections! Meanwhile, try not to get into to much trouble while we’re away and have a great weekend!

The Deep Sea Diving Biz

Here’s a post I’ve been meaning to write for a long time about the work I used to do in the diving business. Although I worked for several different companies during those years the images below are from one company in particular. It’s name was Santa Fe Engineering and Construction and I worked in the Diving Division as a Systems Engineer and a Dive Controller. The company is no longer in business under that name as far as I know because it was bought out and absorbed by some huge offshore company in Dubai in the middle east. That put me out of a job but it was no big deal at the time because I had been offered a better job with another company.

The first picture is a view of one side of the diving complex with the diver’s living quarters (steel pressure chambers) underneath and the diving bell being hoisted over the side into the water in the Gulf of Mexico. The arrow in the photo is pointing to me watching the hull clearance as it’s lowered down. The divers lived in the system for up to 30 days at a time where they stayed under constant pressure equal to the water depth we were working in. This allowed them to save all of their decompression to prevent the bends until the end of the job. This also allowed them to stay underwater using the diving bell for up to 8 hours at a time where they worked in shifts. Notice the 20,000 pound anchor on the vessels deck in the foreground, there were eight of these used to stabilize and hold the position of the ship we were on.

Deep Saturation Diving System

Two divers could ride to the sea floor in the diving bell at one time where one would go outside and work for 4 hours and the other one would stay inside to tend the hose and the diving bell controls, then they would swap out for 4 more hours before returning to the surface. Then, 2 more divers would transfer into the bell and they would go to the seafloor to continue the work. This type of diving was called “total saturation” and allowed underwater work to be done around the clock, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Up to 8 divers could live inside the system at one time. The quarters were extremely cramped, but the divers pay was extremely high.

Total saturation meant that the divers body tissues could absorb no more gases no matter how much longer they stayed down, allowing a fixed amount of decompression at the completion of the job. Sometimes it took to up 3 days of slowly releasing the pressure in the chambers before the divers could safely emerge from the system. It was not very much unlike going into outer space actually, if the diving system were to become quickly depressurized the end result would be deadly, sort of like losing cabin pressure in a space capsule.

This next photo shows the back side of the system and most of it’s auxiliary equipment, including hydraulic power units, air compressors, an emergency chamber, breathing gas bottles and much more and also the control room sitting on top. That’s the small white building with the 2 rear access hatches open. Again the arrow in the photo is pointing at me. That’s an offshore oil drilling platform off in the distance

Deep Saturation Diving System

It took a shitload of equipment and personnel to put men on the bottom to do this type of work where only one man could work at a time. Although the vessel we were on was capable of doing many different roles, when diving was going on the entire crew of up to 300 men did nothing but support for that one task including technicians, mechanics, cooks, clerks, welders and riggers.

Below is a photo of the inside of the control room where 2 dive controllers would sit and converse with the divers on the bottom and in the living quarters. They had a lot of responsibilty because they had to monitor the divers environment pressure and control the mixture of oxygen, nitrogen and other gases in the divers breathing air. They also had closed circuit tv monitors and specialized radio equipment. You can see part of the diving bell thru the window.

Deep Saturation Diving System

The job that these photos were taken from was actually the trial runs for this particular diving system as it had just been completed construction. Everything had to be thoroughly tested on the job site before it could be certified safe to use as life support capable. At this point in my career I didn’t normally work offshore very much, not like I had used to. I was now only going out for initial trial runs because I was in charge of construction of the control rooms and the final asembly of all the major components. That was all done inshore at the companies main base where we completed 5 of these multi-million dollar systems. They were capable of being broken down into it’s smaller components and then reassembled and used at almost any location around the world.

Most often they were used in the Gulf of Mexico, the North Sea and in the middle east but I was always on call to go wherever they were to trouble shoot or help with technical problems that may come up. I loved doing this type of work, it was actually a lot of fun and the pay was damn good too. Not to mention traveling to lots of cool places. One job I was on I spent over a year in Europe. Eventually, after 12 years I did get sick of it and after missing dozens of family holidays and spending time at home with friends I gave it up.

Hope you guys are having a good weekend! The N.O. Jazz Fest started yesterday and I’m still trying to decide if I’m going to go or not. If I do, I’ll certainly get some photos and video to post!

Ferrell Overload

Anyone else sick of seeing Will Ferrell’s movie commercials every 5 minutes on seemingly every single fukkin’ channel on TV? I swear I just wanna throw something at the tube every time I see that goofy looking mug. I was practically driven insane with the Talladega Nights commercials and now it’s for the Blades of Glory movie. If I had a frikkin’ nickle for every one of those commercials I watched I would be a rich man! I think he’s only mildly funny in his movies and I actually hated him when he was on Saturday Night Live, does he really deserve so much damn promotion? Maybe they think if you’re told often enough that he’s funny, you’ll actually start believing it, like subliminal advertising or sumshit. Die bastard DIE! …or at least get off my damn TV.

Anyway, on to something that pisses me off even more! LOL I just had lunch at the local Wendy’s hamburger joint and I decided to “dine in” because I know it’s air conditioned (it’s hot as hell here) and I felt like relaxing for a few. I sit down to eat and I hear what I thought was a talk radio show on the speaker system, I know they usually play music. After a few minutes I realized I was being bombarded by a continuous loop advertisement for Direct TV.

That’s right, a continuous talk show espousing all the “wonderful” benefits of signing up for Direct TV and not only that, but how to trouble shoot your system if it ever stops working, how to use the remote, plug it in to the wall, how to clean the dish, who to call to upgrade existing service and on and on and fukkin’ ON till I wanted to kill someone. Too bad they didn’t tell me who I needed to go “postal” on to make it STOP!! BASTARDS! I started to complain to the manager but decided that it would be more fun to write about it on my blog and of course make up my own Wendys logo! Take that, bitches! Yeah, I know, griping about how lousy fast food restaurants are and how much they SUCK ASS has been a recurring theme around here. But, dammit, fast food ain’t cheap, it’s just convenient, does the service and the experience have to be so shitty?

Wendys Restaurants Suck

This same Wendys had their “dining room” completely remodeled lately with all new fixtures, carpet and seating. It’s nice, but what cracks me up is they have a sign next to the building bragging about the new interior and that you should “See It Inside!” Well, DUH you stupid dumbasses, where else would we freekin’ see it, out in the damn street, …on the roof maybe? Whatever…

Now for something good! My friend Joe over at East Coast Gourmet liked his new blog that I designed for him so much that he sent me an awesome dinner of lobster tails, lobster bisque, clam chowder and crackers and even threw in a couple of desserts as a bonus! He Fedex overnighted it to me and everything was ‘tres delicious! He uses his blog to put up recipes for all kinds of tasty sounding New England delicacies, you should check it out. And of course you can order just about anything delivered from the website. Thanks Joe, it was much appreciated!

Now for something even better!! Lisa has been cracking me up for the past few weeks with a little song she sings to me, to remind me that I only have X number of chemo injections left, how cool is that! Tomorrow I take my very last injection out of a weekly series that I started last JUNE!! Yeah, this shit’s been going on forever! I guess I was whining a bit about how shitty it made me feel a few weeks ago and she started singing that I only had three more injections to try to cheer me up. Then last week it was two more, then this week it was one more. You get the picture. Tomorrow she said she’ll be singing “No More Injections” LOL Very cute! Thanks sweetheart!!

That’s all I got! Hope you guys have a killer-diller weekend!~!
