Mardi Gras King Cakes
The King Cake is believed to have originated in France around the 12th Century. In European countries, the coming of the three wise men bringing gifts to the child Jesus is celebrated twelve days after Christmas, called the Feast of the Epiphany, or Little Christmas on the Twelfth Night, or King’s Day.
The most popular custom is the baking of a special cake in honor of the three kings… a “Kings Cake.” These cakes were made in a circle shape to portray the circular route used by the wise men. This route was taken in order to confuse King Herod who was trying to kill the Christ child.
In early European king cakes, a bean, a pea, or a coin was hidden inside the dough and the person who got the piece was declared king for a day, or was said to have good luck in the coming year. The Latin Americans; however, put a small figure inside the cakes representing the Christ child. The tradition has now evolved that the person who gets the baby is expected to carry on the carnival festivities by hosting the next king cake party. Starting the twelfth day after Christmas, king cake parties continue until the first day of Lent, ending on Fat Tuesday, also known as Mardi Gras day!

King cakes were first introduced with little decorations on a simple ring of dough. The New Orleans style king cake is brightly decorated with the traditional Mardi Gras colors: purple, representing justice; green, representing faith; and gold, representing power. A fresh baked king cake is fine Louisiana tradition. I can’t describe just how good these cakes really are and they come stuffed with different fruit or cinnamon flavors.
These cakes are carried by many stores such as bakeries and groceries and are eaten at this house just for the hell of it, no “party” needed as they are that good!

Hi again… I came back to see if you answered me before, and I saw this post.. but I’ve no attention span so I looked at the pix instead.. now I’m hungry. LOL
Thanks a bunch for reminding me I have no worthy food in this house to eat. You are swell!

Damnit. Now I’m craving a King cake. How is it that my So Cal parents knew about this tradition? I remember being the “King of the Day” a few years in a row. It was my first voyage into cross-dressing.
We never had a baby, bean, pea or coin in the cake btw, it was always one of those hardened sugar cake decorations.
Loves me some King Cake! I remember being at my aunt’s house in Lafayette when I tried my firt one. I was about 10 I guess. Here in Southeast Texas, we celebrate Mardi Gras also. I am a King Cake expert (I was going to write connoisseur but didn’t want to look it up to see if I was spelling it right…that’s my best guess.)
angel= haha silly girl! i love coming by your blog just to read tha bazillion comments between you and DH!
Lois= somethin bout cakes and pies makes me horny haha oh wait i am that way all the time!
Becka= even though we claim it as a “Mardi Gras” tradition, it is actually worldwide because of its old religious roots that span the globe…

Hey ya coonass.
One of my friends in college, who is from ‘orleans, would bring a fresh one back to Dallas with her…cherry and cheese I think? Could that be right? It was real good. I should look around here for a bakery that makes good ones. You have a fav or flav?
cav= yeah they make em in a wide variety of flavors the one in my pics was (notice i didn’t say is, that sucker is loooong gone) strawberry and thats my favorite i think….
Becka= you no have a blog? i keep trying your link and it goes to an apparent random webpage? or am i missing something?…
That was interesting…I didn’t know about the king cake! In Belgium, the children dress up like the three kings and go door to door singing king songs (not elvis) and get candy or money for their efforts. Kind of like trick-or-treating.
To this day, I have never found the baby or whatever in the king cake. Then again, I don’t chew very well. Oh my God! I might have swallowed it whole!
Seven, not sure what is up with the link.

Seven,
OmiGawd…it’s deja vu. We make pastries with purple & green icing on many occasions here, mostly Dia de los Muertos. I think the colors come from our Catholic heritage; you know, green and purple robes, etc. with the seasons (advent, etc) in the Church. We really are all one people in the Universe….so glad I found you. Of course I want a King’s Cake. Today. And I lov hearing about your culture and traditions. xxxx’s veronica
